Telstra Intranet
We redesigned the Telstra intranet, which then comprised over 800 servers and was used by over 40,000 staff across the country, as part of a web-enablement drive to improve productivity and efficiency throughout the company.
Without a content model and site structure focused on their needs, users were overwhelmed with irrelevant, low-priority and stale content. As finding useful information was hard, they tended to limit their use of the intranet – promoting a "silo" outlook and hindering business improvement.
What we did
We conducted focus groups and contextual enquiry sessions to determine user and business requirements for the intranet, and card-sorting sessions with Telstra staff to determine the optimum structure for the information users really needed.
We helped Telstra identify redundant and stale content, leading to a major reduction in the number of servers required.
In the design phase, we used collaborative design and usability walkthroughs to refine our initial concepts for the site structure and interaction design. We also undertook the visual design involved in rebranding the intranet.
Hiser also were responsible for the analysis and design of an internal content management tool, created to allow Telstra staff to maintain the user-centred approach as the intranet continues to develop.
Result: fast return on investment
The resulting information architecture was flexible, effective, and simple for users to navigate. Productivity ROI from the redesign was achieved within three months of deployment – the goal was 12 months.
